And so it came to pass that the master of macro Alex Hyde took the first of two instruction days to teach us how he gets his amazing images, some of which you can see on his website here. Our setting was Clare and Duncan’s farm so many thanks to them.

We had some initial instruction then Alex made sure we were all up and running with the required equipment before we ventured out into the cold to shoot various little things around the farm. After a hearty lunch we were shown how to use a butcher’s tray and two flashes to get some amazing images of various small creatures. Set-ups were then created around the room with some fascinating mantids before everything was wrapped up with a summary of the day.

The instruction was excellent and everybody appeared to learn something and come out with some fantastic photos. The day also made us look at things you would normally miss or overlook in a different way and realise how many interesting things are all around us and at our feet. Alex will be returning to the club in December to do another talk, or talks but for now, here are the photos from the day:
